Official poker rankings: ties and kickers

Poker is all about making the best five-card poker hand from the seven cards available (five community cards plus your own two hole cards). That means in the event of a tie with four of a kind, three of a kind, two pair, one pair, or high card, a side card, or 'kicker', comes into play to decide who wins the pot.

For example:

Player A's best five cards

Player B's best five cards

Player A wins the hand with Q kicker.

With a three of a kind, one pair or high card tie, a second, third or even fourth kicker could come into play to decide the pot. If the kickers can’t decide one overall winner, those players involved are just going to have to share the pot.

Set Over Set

Let's move on to some post-flop odds -- specifically sets, meaning trips with a pocket pair.

How often do you flop a set ? Every ambitious poker player should know this number by heart: roughly 12% of the time or once every 9 times you see a flop with your pair.

Set over set, baby.

A scenario many poker players are afraid of is the dreaded set over set: you flop a set but one of your opponents flops a better set.

Although quite unlikely this scenario is not that uncommon. If two players have pocket pairs, both will flop a set simultaneously roughly once every 100 flops .

You still need two players to have a pocket pair at the same time for that to happen. At a full-ring table you can expect to see a set-over-set scenario roughly once every 1,200 hands (assuming all players with pocket pairs always see a flop).

Heads-up this scenario is much more unlikely, though. It should happen only once every 42,000 hands . So there's no need to worry about better sets with only one opponent – unless of course you're Phil Ivey playing Scotty Nguyen in one of the biggest heads-up tournaments on TV:

List of poker hands

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to navigation Jump to search An ace-high straight flush, commonly known as a royal flush , is the best possible hand in many variants of poker.

In poker , players construct sets of five playing cards , called hands , according to the rules of the game being played. [1] Each hand has a rank , which is compared against the ranks of other hands participating in the showdown to determine who wins the pot . [2] In high games, like Texas hold 'em and seven-card stud , the highest-ranking hands win. In low games, like razz , the lowest-ranking hands win. In high-low split games, both the highest-ranking and lowest-ranking hands win, though different rules are used to rank the high and low hands. [3] [4]

Wizard Of Odds Texas Holdem

There are nine hand-ranking categories when using a standard 52-card deck , except under ace-to-five low rules where straights, flushes and straight flushes are not recognized. An additional category, five of a kind, is introduced when using one or more wild cards . The fewer hands a category contains, the higher its rank. [10] There are 311,875,200 ways to deal five cards from the deck but only 2,598,960 distinct hands, because the order in which cards are dealt or arranged in a hand does not matter. [11] Moreover, since hands differing only by suit are of equal rank, there are only 7,462 distinct hand ranks when using nine hand categories. [12] [13]

The probability of this hand being dealt at any time is 1 in 2548. At the time I estimated I had played 300k hands of the game, and the odds of .. Jun 1, 2018 .. Probability Of Getting A Straight Flush Or Royal Flush When Holding QJs

up vote 3 down vote favorite

Given that you are dealt the J♥ and Q♥, what is the probability that you will eventually make a straight flush or royal flush?

Having these cards in your hand means that: 1). the only way you could possibly make a straight flush is if your hand becomes:

  • 8♥ 9♥ T♥ J♥ Q♥
  • 9♥ T♥ J♥ Q♥ K♥

2). the only way you could possibly make a royal flush is if your hand becomes:

  • T♥ J♥ Q♥ K♥ A♥

I'm having a difficult time in figuring the probability of this.

Running into Aces with Kings

With aces you have nothing to fear before the flop . But with pocket kings there is always this nagging thought in the back of your head that maybe, just maybe, one of your opponents has aces.

Odds Royal Flush Texas Holdem

He folded Kings in the Main Event!

Is that a likely scenario? The answer is, as it often is in poker, “it depends.'

If you're playing heads-up you're only up against one opponent. That opponent only has aces roughly once every 220 hands.

So, no. It's not likely he has your kings beat.

But at a full-ring table (9 players) with 8 opponents, it's suddenly much more likely – albeit still a long-shot – that someone has aces against your kings.

The odds for that to happen are 1 in 26 . You're almost always better off disregarding this worst-case scenario, but sometimes really good players can make impressive folds with kings before the flop.

Here's German young gun Christopher Frank doing exactly that during the 2016 WSOP Main Event:

Obviously if you see raise, RR, shove, then you need to fold AJ suited.

Two of them in a few days seemed improbable with the low volume that I played. Last edited by arlecchino76; 04-14-2012 at 07:05 AM.

No one is going to pay with 6th flush, or with a straight when the flush has come in, really.

Pardon bumping an old thread. If this information is correct, and it looks to be correct, would a 2-card-in-hand royal flush show up 1 in ~6.5k hands at a 10-handed table? Obviously some assumption is being made that every suited broadway hand enters the pot and plays to the river. Just trying to find some facts in a world of mis-information

Yes, since only 1 player can have a royal with 2 cards in his hand, the players having a royal represent mutually exclusive events, so the probabilities add, and the probability for 10 players is exactly 10 times that for 1 player. The other numbers are correct too. Happy Mutually Exclusive Day. Quote:

Wave Function stranger Join Date: Jun 2014 Posts: 5 Re: Odds on Royal flush A guy at my table the other day flopped a royal flush. I believe the odds are in the neighborhood of 650,000 to 1 and making one by the river is something like 65,000 to 1. He got payed 0 of his own money back that was pumped into the promo fund. This is just ludicrous and insulting. Oh and BTW this guy who is a semi reg, did not know about the promotion. I really hope the new manager gets back to the basics regarding marketing of what could be a top poker room in the Country. Whatever route he decides to go promotion wise, this information needs to be communicated to the players and casual casino patrons. Doing things like listing the BBJ on billboards in and out of the casino, requiring poker room hosts to actively direct players to a clear and concise poster of the promotions so they are informed (Bravo is nice, but many players have no idea what it is). I personally would love to see the BBJ grow quicker and money funneled into reserves so it does not reset at a comical number. At certain levels the hand requirements should be reduced like many rooms do. Quad 10's or better has to be the hardest BBJ to hit in the Country. I would also love to see progressive royal flush payouts. Its a nice promotion that builds excitement and does not neglect the weekend player. Lastly please bring back 'Poker Plinko' I can think of no better poker room promo......just kidding. Good luck to the new manager and I hope that upper management allows him to do his job.
